OCSiAl has been named as a supplier of single wall carbon nanotubes to PowerCo, the battery manufacturing subsidiary of Volkswagen Group, for its Unified Cell battery platform. The manufacturing facility, located in Serbia, is active since 2024.

Nanotubes for PowerCo will be supplied from OCSiAl’s production facility in Stara Pazova in Serbia. Advanced nanotube solutions integrated into electrodes help improve safety, charging performance, and battery service life, said OCSiAl, based in Luxembourg.

PowerCo is the battery manufacturing subsidiary of Volkswagen Group, for its Unified Cell battery platform. The firm’s facility Salzgitter in Lower Saxony, Germany, is active since late last year. It was the first full line for battery cells in Europe, the giant carmaker’s announced at the time.

The factory in Serbia, established in 2024, has met stringent quality and reliability requirements and has successfully passed audits conducted by PowerCo and other  European and Asian battery manufacturers, OCSiAl pointed out.

According to the company, it is the world’s largest producer of graphene nanotubes and it supplies its Tuball single wall carbon nanotubes from Serbia to most electric vehicle battery manufacturers in Europe. They are used in both cathode and anode systems of lithium ion batteries to improve energy density, fast-charging performance, and battery cycle life, the update reads.

OCSiAl stands for oxygen (O), carbon (C), silicon (Si) and aluminum (Al)

“Today, batteries containing OCSiAl nanotubes power around one million electric vehicles worldwide. In the PowerCo project, we supply nanotube solutions for graphite anodes. Single wall carbon nanotubes significantly enhance the electrical conductivity of graphite anodes and improve heat dissipation, enabling battery cells to operate at higher charging and discharging currents without overheating,” said the nanotechnology company’s Senior Vice President Gregory Gurevich.

OCSiAl is developing its flagship graphene nanotube facility in Luxembourg, valued at USD 300 million. The company was established in 2010.
