Romania achieved its highest-ever solar power output on June 19 at 12:33. Dispatchable photovoltaic plants had almost 3 GW online, covering nearly three quarters of grid electricity consumption at that moment.

According to data from Romanian transmission system operator Transelectrica, active dispatchable solar power systems amounted to 2.952 GW on June 19 at 12:33. It is the highest level ever recorded in the country, e-nergia.ro reported.

Separately, the company estimated that prosumers had 1.93 GW on the same day between noon and 13:00. It translates to nearly 5 GW in active photovoltaic systems in Romania in the midday hours.

Total instantaneous electricity generation in Romania at 12:33 was measured at 6.02 GW. One of the two nuclear reactors in Cernavodă was offline. Domestic electricity consumption from the grid at that moment was 4.1 GW.

Dispatchable solar power plants, which exclude prosumers, covered up to 72% of electricity consumption from the grid

Therefore, solar power plants accounted for 49% of national electricity generation in the said moment. They also covered 72% of national electricity consumption from the grid, which excludes prosumers’ self-consumption.

At the moment of the highest solar power generation, Romania’s electricity system was exporting electricity at a power level of around 2.2 GW. The spot market price was RON 74 per MWh, or EUR 14 per MWh, in the 15-minute interval. In the evening hours, after solar power fades, the price rose to as high as RON 1,500 per MWh (EUR 286 per MWh).

The previous record for instantaneous generation from dispatchable solar power plants was set one day earlier, at 2.69 GW.

As Romania’s solar power capacity continues to grow, new records can be expected.

According to data from the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), there is 3.34 GW in larger, dispatchable solar power plants. In addition, the number of prosumers in Romania has exceeded 320,000, while the capacity of their installations is above 3.7 GW.
