Elektroprenos BiH-Elektroprijenos BiH has awarded a telecommunication system modernization contract to a group of five companies from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia.
The contract, estimated at BAM 46.7 million (EUR 23.9 million), was awarded to Bosnia and Herzegovina-based Artco group (Novo Sarajevo), Saga NFG (Banja Luka), and Telegroup (Banja Luka), and Serbian firms Saga (Belgrade) and Telegroup (Belgrade).
Elektroprenos BiH owns the country’s electricity transmission infrastructure, while the Independent System Operator in Bosnia and Herzegovina (NOS BiH) is responsible for managing the transmission system and acts as the transmission system operator (TSO).
The current infrastructure has not been upgraded since 2004
The tender for the telecommunication system modernization was launched in February 2025, and only one bid was submitted. The contract was signed on October 7 and officially published on November 2. The deadline for execution of the works, according to the tender documentation, is 36 months.
The project’s objective is to modernize the telecommunication system to support all operational, security, and administrative processes within the company.
The current infrastructure has not been upgraded since 2004, leading to operational risks and limitations regarding capacity and technological obsolescence, the tender documentation reads.
Of note, in late June, Elektroprenos BiH secured a EUR 46 million loan to finance the procurement and installation of four variable shunt reactors at key substations across BiH.
Four main goals
The project has four main goals. The first is to increase network capacity to support high-speed data transmission (up to 400 G on main links), thereby accommodating growing data demands and supporting new IP services.
Increasing operational security is the second one. The intention is to provide robust security mechanisms, including cyberattack protection. The third goal is reducing maintenance costs, and the fourth is flexibility and scalability.
The establishment of the new communication infrastructure will encompass all 157 facilities of the company, according to Elektroprijenos BiH.
The works are structured on a turnkey basis.
