Slovenia has approved a total of EUR 8.5 million in subsidies for electric bicycle purchases over the past two years.
The country is now wrapping up another major round of incentives for e-bike purchases, an initiative that has established electric bicycles as a key element of sustainable mobility in recent years.
Slovenian electricity market operator Borzen expects the current call for applications to close soon, as the available funds are nearly exhausted. Future subsidies have yet to be confirmed, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy.
A significant contribution to greener transportation
A total of about EUR 8.5 million was allocated for e-bike subsidies through two public calls, supporting the purchase of over 18,000 electric bicycles. The program has significantly boosted the adoption of eco-friendly transportation, helping reduce traffic emissions, the ministry explained.
A major portion of the funding was disbursed through the 2024 call, which granted subsidies worth EUR 6.5 million to more than 14,000 e-bike buyers.
Driven by strong demand, a new public call was launched in April this year, backing the scheme with an additional EUR 2 million from the Climate Change Fund.
No additional funding is currently planned
Borzen reported that over EUR 1.9 million of the available EUR 2 million has already been reserved under the ongoing call, prompting expectations of an imminent closure.
As with electric vehicle incentives, no further funding is currently planned for e-bikes.
State incentives targeted city, folding, and cargo e-bikes, helping citizens to replace daily car trips with more sustainable transportation alternatives.
Subsidies of up to EUR 1,000
Subsidies for city and folding e-bikes covered up to 25% of the purchase price, or a maximum of EUR 500, for models priced up to EUR 2,500. For cargo e-bikes, the incentive covered up to 30% of the price, or a maximum of EUR 1,000.
According to the ministry, electric bicycles offer an affordable and energy-efficient solution, supporting Slovenia’s efforts to curb reliance on fossil fuels in the transportation sector.
Future incentive schemes for e-bikes will depend on upcoming government decisions for the Climate Change Fund’s spending strategy, scheduled for review this fall.
Slovenia’s e-bike fleet currently exceeds 80,000 units.
