SGE, GE Vernova, Hitachi, and Samsung C&T have agreed to cooperate on advancing the deployment of BWRX-300 small modular reactors in Central and Eastern Europe and the United Kingdom. The project combines American technology, Japanese and Korean industrial capabilities, and European supply chains, according to a joint press release.
The four companies signed a memorandum of understanding to assess market opportunities, further develop deployment strategies, and pursue commercial opportunities for the BWRX-300, a 300 MW small modular reactor (SMR) developed by GE Vernova and Hitachi.
The designer and technology provider for the BWRX-300 is a US-based joint venture between GE Vernova and Hitachi, called GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH).

The reactor has a simplified, standardized design, intended to support repeatable deployment and efficient project delivery. With the first unit already under construction in Canada, the BWRX-300 is well positioned to support Europe’s nuclear expansion by strengthening energy security and delivering reliable, carbon-free power at scale, reads the press release.
Rafał Kasprów, CEO of SGE, said the agreement brings together state-of-the-art American nuclear technology from GVH, the industrial and technological capabilities of Hitachi and Samsung, and SGE’s European BWRX-300 development platform.
“Our objective is to establish a standardized, cross-border BWRX-300 fleet across the European Union and the United Kingdom, creating a new layer of secure, reliable and low-carbon generation capacity,” he said.
Poland-based SGE will act as the regional lead in much of Central and Eastern Europe
The effort combines American technology, Japanese and Korean industrial strength, and European development capabilities and supply chains to lay the foundations of a long-term nuclear strategic program designed to strengthen Europe’s energy security, according to Kasprów.
SGE, a European SMR development platform headquartered in Warsaw, Poland, will continue to act as the exclusive regional lead for the reactor in much of Central and Eastern Europe, according to the press release.
The memorandum of understanding was signed in New York in the presence of US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Masayoshi Arai, Vice-Minister for International Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
