Final testing is underway at the 48 MW wind power plant in Pecineaga in southeastern Romania. Eurowind Energy said the facility features the largest turbines in the country. It scheduled the inauguration for April 29.

Performance testing, safety checks and system integration will be conducted in the current, validation phase of the Pecineaga wind park project, as the substation and turbines have been energized, Eurowind Energy announced. The investment is worth EUR 90 million.

Located in Pecineaga in Romania’s far southeast, the facility is in the vicinity of the port city of Constanța. The Dobruja (Dobrogea) region is the country’s wind energy hub.

The Denmark-based company built 48 MW. Pecineaga consists of eight Siemens Gamesa’s SG 6.6-170 turbines. They are the largest in Romania, Eurowind Energy stressed. The rotors are 170 meters in diameter, with 135-meter towers.

Expected to generate 176 GWh per year, equivalent to the needs of 48,000 households, the wind park is scheduled for inauguration on April 29.

“We have reached this point later than we would have liked, but the important thing is that the project has now entered the final testing phase, and we are optimistic that from now on things will progress at a good pace,” said Eurowind Energy’s Country Manager for Romania Adrian Dobre.

The delay was reportedly because of several requests from the country’s transmission system operator Transelectrica. They included integrating an automatic operation limitation system. The wind park has a 12-year virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with automotive manufacturer Autoliv.

Pecineaga is separate from Eurowind Energy’s project Pecineaga Northeast (Nord Est or NordEst). It won a contract for difference (CfD) last summer at the country’s second round of renewable energy auctions, for 48 MW. The start of construction is expected this year.

The company entered the Romanian market in 2011. It operates solar farms Hălchiu, Măgurele, Pufești and Teiuș, and has a project pipeline of 7.5 GW.
