Eurowind Energy working to connect Pecineaga wind park to Romanian grid

Denmark-based Eurowind Energy built all the wind turbines at its Pecineaga plant of 48 MW. The strongest in Romania so far, they are scheduled to be put into operation later this year.

The wind power market in Romania is charging up again, though still few facilities are coming online – unlike in the photovoltaics sphere. Danish renewables developer and operator Eurowind Energy said it erected all eight turbines at its Pecineaga wind park. The site is near Constanța in the Dobrogea region (also known as Dobruja and Dobrudja), the country’s wind hub.

Pecineaga has a 48 MW connection approved. It consists of Siemens Gamesa’s SG 6.6-170 machines of 6.6 MW in nominal terms and a 170-meter rotor diameter. They are the strongest in Romania.

Siemens Gamesa will also maintain the system for 20 years. Eurowind Energy pointed out that the model is optimized for operation even at low wind conditions.

Investment valued at EUR 79 million

The wind farm will be connected to the transmission grid later this year, according to the schedule. Its estimated annual output is 176 GWh, equivalent to the electricity needs of 48,000 Romanian households.

The construction of the Pecineaga facility began in 2023

The investment, through the project firm WEP Technology Investment, is worth EUR 79 million. The company launched the endeavor in 2015 and the construction began in 2023.

Eurowind Energy entered Romania in 2011 and built three solar parks of 7 MW altogether. It develops and operates wind, solar and hybrid power plants. According to its latest update, the developer has 8 GW of renewables in the pipeline in the country. It aims to put an overall 1.38 GW into operation there by 2030.

Romania is fastest-growing market for Eurowind Energy

Last year the company said it was expanding in Romania the fastest among all its markets.

Eurowind Energy is also about to commission its Teiuș solar farm in Alba county in Transylvania. The facility has a 60.2 MW grid connection. A battery energy storage system of 117 MWh is under construction in Teiuș. The Danish company signed a EUR 7.6 million grant contract late last year for the facility. The funds are from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP or PNRR) of Romania.

The company is planning final investment decisions (FID) this year for wind power projects Frumușița (66 MW) and Vector Wind (24 MW) in Galați county in Western Moldavia and Pecineaga Northeast (48 MW), and a PV plant in Vișina, of 220 MW in connection capacity.

The first two were selected at Romania’s first wind and solar power auction round for government support through contracts for difference (CfDs). The deadline for completion and the entry into the subsidy mechanism is January 2028.

Eurowind Energy is also building a 238 MW solar power plant in Yambol in neighboring Bulgaria, with Renalfa IPP. They plan to add wind turbines and batteries.
