Romanian transmission system operator Transelectrica intends to modernize the transmission network, including cross-border interconnections with Hungary, Moldova and Serbia.

Romanian TSO Transelectrica has presented the transmission system development plan 2026–2035 (Planul de Dezvoltare a Reţelei Electrice de Transport) worth more than RON 12 billion (EUR 2.2 billion) to develop and modernize the national power transmission grid (Reţelei Electrice de Transport – RET) by 2035.

Roughly 20% of the total allocation is dedicated to boosting cross-border interconnection capacity, the company added.

The development plan 2026–2035 comprises 117 investments

“Transelectrica is preparing one of the most extensive stages of development and modernization of Romania’s power transmission infrastructure. The RET development plan 2026–2035 comprises 117 investments, out of which 25 are completely new, with a total value exceeding RON 12 billion, including financing from European funds,” Transelectrica said on Facebook.

The investments aim to modernize and refurbish existing power lines and substations, develop 400 kV infrastructure, continue closing the national 400 kV ring, integrate new generation capacity, including from renewable sources, and expand power transmission capacity.

The plan incorporates major projects for connections with Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova

The strategy also focuses on developing interconnections with neighboring power systems, constructing new substations, installing transformers and power flow control equipment, and digitalizing the transmission network through modern monitoring, automation, and control systems, the update reads.

Nearly 19% of the total investment program or RON 2.3 billion (EUR 431.2 million), is allocated directly to boosting interconnection capacity.

The plan incorporates major projects for connections with Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova, alongside the reinforcement of domestic infrastructure required for cross-border energy exchanges, the company explained.

Digital twin technologies to be introduced

The investment initiative for the decade covers the entire country, ranging from the development of the grid in Dobrogea to strengthening power transmission corridors in the west and establishing new 400 kV axes, such as Gădălin–Suceava and Suceava–Bălți.

The transmission network is set to become increasingly digitalized. Projects such as DigiTEL Next-Gen Power Grid and DigiTEL Smart Lines will introduce digital twin technologies, autonomous robotic systems, and online monitoring of overhead power lines, according to the post.

In 2025, Transelectrica invested EUR 129.5 million

The company stressed that its target for 2035 is a stronger, more flexible, more digitalized, and better interconnected grid, capable of integrating new production capacity and responding to the transformations of the national power system.

In 2025, Transelectrica executed an investment program worth approximately RON 691 million (EUR 129.5 million). For 2026, the company planned an investment budget of RON 914 million (EUR 171.3 million).
