Enery, an independent power producer active in Central and Eastern Europe, has signed a long-term physical power purchase agreement (PPA) with beverage producer Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria for the supply of renewable electricity from the Knizhovnik hybrid power plant in southern Bulgaria. The facility launched production this week.

Under a new deal, Enery will supply Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria with locally generated renewable electricity, annually and based on a fixed solar generation profile.

It is the second corporate PPA for the independent power producer’s Knizhovnik hybrid power plant, demonstrating how large-scale renewable assets combining solar generation and battery storage can support the different energy needs of major industrial and commercial consumers, the update reads. The 15-year deal with Teva Pharmaceuticals was the first PPA in Central and Eastern Europe for photovoltaics with batteries, the company noted.

Annual output of Knizhovnik seen at 200 GWh

Knizhovnik is near Haskovo in southern Bulgaria. The hybrid power plant consists of a photovoltaic system with 122 MW in peak capacity, and two battery energy storage systems (BESS) with capacities of 70 MWh and 130 MWh. The Vienna-based company estimated the annual output at 200 GWh, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of almost 50,000 households in the country.

“Long-term PPAs create lasting value when they bring together competitive energy sourcing, long-term predictability and measurable decarbonization progress. Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria EAD has demonstrated a strong leadership in reducing its operational footprint, and we are proud to support that journey with locally generated renewable electricity. What makes Knizhovnik truly stand out is its innovative commercial design: by co-locating utility-scale solar with BESS and layering multi-offtaker structures, we optimize portfolio generation, capture flexibility, and deliver tailored risk-managed energy solutions to diverse corporate partners,” said Enery’s Chief Commercial Officer Severin Vartigov.

PPA announcement coincides with launch of operations

Knizhovnik, commissioned this week, is Enery’s second hybrid power plant in Bulgaria. In Ogrezeni in neighboring Romania, the company is building a BESS-solar facility set to become the largest in Europe.

Enery has a portfolio of 2 GW under construction and in operation, and generates 1.1 TWh per year. The project pipeline across 10 countries in CEE amounts to nearly 10 GW. In addition, the company manages 8.5 GWh of third-party battery storage capacity.

The PPA supports Coca-Cola HBC’s wider commitment to reducing emissions across its operations and value chain and achieving net zero emissions by 2040.
