The price of the CBAM certificate for the third quarter of 2026 is EUR 82.32, up from around EUR 75 in the first two quarters of the year.

The price of EUR 82.32 is 9.35% higher than the second quarter’s EUR 75.28. In the first quarter, it amounted to EUR 75.36.

The European Commission noted that it would calculate each quarterly price in 2026 will be calculated during the first calendar week following the end of the relevant quarter. The calculation is based on publicly available information related to EU ETS auctions, the commission added.

eu region cbam certificate price increase

Of note, the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) entered into force on January 1 this year.

Since the beginning of this year, firms in the EU that import aluminum, cement, electricity, iron and steel, hydrogen and fertilizers from non-EU countries are obliged to pay a carbon price under CBAM.

But, the deadline to submit CBAM certificates for 2026 is May 31, 2027.

All CBAM certificates will be purchased on the common central platform

According to the commission, each quarterly price in 2026 will apply to the sales of CBAM certificates corresponding to emissions in CBAM goods imported into the EU during that quarter.

Pursuant to Article 20 of Regulation (EU) 2023/956, all CBAM certificates will be purchased on the common central platform from February 2027 onwards, the commission explained.

Electricity producers and developers in the Energy Community are facing challenges

Renewable electricity producers and developers in the Energy Community are facing challenges in complying with CBAM conditions on actual emission values, which additionally increases uncertainty in projected revenues.

Power utility Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG), based in Montenegro, one of the contracting parties of the Energy Community, will pay a market price of EUR 75 for CO2 emissions, according to the company’s President of the Board of Directors Milutin Đukanović.

A few weeks ago the European Parliament backed the European Commission’s proposal to extend the carbon border tax to steel and aluminium downstream goods, including finished steel and aluminium goods, fasteners, wire, springs, and finished steel and aluminium household goods.

The United Kingdom announced that it has recognized carbon pricing schemes from the European Union and 15 countries, including Montenegro and Serbia.
