The Central Bosnia Canton in Bosnia and Herzegovina plans to invest EUR 15.9 million in energy efficiency of public buildings.

The investment is intended for energy renovation of public buildings, predominantly educational and health institutions.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering a sovereign loan of up to EUR 12 million to the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to be on-lent to the Central Bosnia Canton through the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH).

The funds will be used to finance energy efficiency measures in up to 55 public buildings

It is one of the two entities making up BiH, the other one being the Republic of Srpska.

The energy saving projects would be implemented by the Ministry of Spatial Planning of the Central Bosnia Canton, according to the bank’s website.

The funds will be used to finance energy efficiency measures in up to 55 public buildings, the project summary document reads.

The project also includes switching to other fuels

The energy efficiency measures will include outer walls insulation, new glazing, roof insulation, energy efficient lighting, aiming to reduce energy consumption for each building.

It will also include switching to other fuels, resulting in an estimated reduction of primary energy demand of at least 30%.

The project is expected to be co-financed with an investment grant in the amount of up to EUR 3 million

The investment will help the Central Bosnia Canton achieve energy savings, replace outdated infrastructure, reduce negative environmental impacts and improve comfort and quality of services in these public buildings, according to the document.

The project is expected to be co-financed with an investment grant in the amount of up to EUR 3 million from the European Union’s Renewable Energy Efficiency Programme for the Western Balkans (REEP).

The loan’s approval is scheduled for June 17, 2026, the EBRD said.
