A record was broken in Turkey in August with an output of 9.9 TWh of solar and wind power combined. The country is pursuing complete energy independence, said Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.

Photovoltaics provided 5.16 TWh in August in Turkey, while the production of wind power amounted to 4.74 TWh, making up a record altogether. Together they made up 27% of the entire output – 36.7 TWh, according to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.

“Our goal is not only to meet the current energy demand, but to build a strong infrastructure that is sustainable, innovative, and completely free from external dependence,” Minister Arparslan Bayraktar stated. Integrating the high solar and wind potential with the most advanced technologies, Turkey is moving confidently toward complete energy independence, he stressed.

Hydropower retains biggest share

Hydropower remained the biggest contributor. It accounted for 9.08 TWh or 24.7%. Solar power’s share was 14.1% of the total, versus 12.9% from wind turbines.

Renewable sources came in at 20.7 TWh altogether in August, or 56.4%. Electricity production from domestic sources, another important measure, reached 25.6 TWh or 69.7%. It excludes imported fossil fuels.

The highest daily output of 2026 was registered on August 13, at 1.24 TWh.

Record levels also for year’s first eight months

Looking at the data for the first eight months of 2026, hydropower plants generated 75.2 TWh.

Wind power contributed 30.4 TWh while PV systems delivered 29.8 TWh to the grid.

Domestic electricity production, at 73.2% and 181.8 TWh, and renewable energy production, at 60.3% and 149.8 TWh, were both the highest in both categories at least since the year 2000.

At the end of August, Turkey’s electricity capacity was 126.9 GW, of which 79.9 or 62.9% from renewable sources. The calculation of domestic sources showed 72.1% of the total.

Solar power share’s climbed to a record 27.9 GW or 22%, compared to wind power’s 15.4 GW and 12.2%, respectively. Together they have surpassed a third of the entire electricity production capacity, reaching 34.2%.
