Serbia plans to continue its partnership with Masdar in the renewable energy sector, with the next phase potentially focusing on the installation of battery energy storage systems (BESS), according to Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović.
Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co. – Masdar and Finnish renewable energy fund manager Taaleri Energia inaugurated the 154 MW Čibuk 2 wind farm in Serbia yesterday. Combined with Čibuk 1 (158 MW), it is the largest wind power complex in the Western Balkans.
The ceremony was attended by Minister Đedović Handanović, who met today with Masdar Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.
“We are continuing to build our partnership with Masdar in developing renewable energy sources in Serbia,” the minister said following the meeting.
Đedović Handanović: Time for the next step in Serbia–Masdar cooperation
Đedović Handanović noted that Masdar has already proven to be a reliable partner for Serbia, as Čibuk 1 and Čibuk 2 jointly account for 25% of the country’s total wind and solar capacity, generating enough electricity for nearly 180,000 households.
She pointed out that it is now time for the next step – a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) and Masdar.
“The MoU would open up space for joint initiatives and projects, including the construction of large-scale battery energy storage systems, which I discussed with Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi,” Đedović Handanović added.
Serbia a strategic market for Masdar
In late 2024, Masdar Business Development and Investment Director Ahmed Al-Awadi told Balkan Green Energy News that Serbia, the company’s entry point to the Balkans, remains its strategic market.
The company is highly active across the region.
In January this year, Masdar signed a cooperation agreement with Montenegro’s state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG). The partnership was advanced in late July by agreeing on joint projects in the solar sector.
