Wind turbine manufacturer Enercon and energy firms İş Enerji and Polat Enerji signed a memorandum of understanding for the installation of a 2.5 GW of onshore wind power plants in Turkey and surrounding countries.

Germany’s Enercon and Turkey’s İş Enerji and Polat Enerji have forged an alliance at the German-Turkish Energy Forum in Berlin. The signing took place in the presence of German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck and Turkish Minister of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar.

According to Enercon, in the memorandum of understanding (MoU), the partners agreed to jointly materialize onshore projects in Turkey and nearby countries, with a total capacity of 2,500 MW, over the next five years.

As part of this cooperation, Enercon said it would supply and install the turbine technology and provide long-term services for the wind farms.

Turkey is the sixth-largest onshore wind market in Europe

Polat Enerji is one of the largest wind energy operators in Turkey, with an installed capacity of over 740 MW. It has already cooperated with Enercon. The company is 50/50 owned by Polat Holding and İş Enerji Yatirimlari, a subsidiary of Türkiye İş Bankası, the largest private sector bank in Turkey.

Polat Enerji operates Soma, the largest wind farm in Turkey, with an installed capacity of 288.1 MW. İş Enerji’s installed solar energy capacity has reached 179.2 MW while its wind power portfolio amounts to 777 MW.

With a total capacity of around 13 GW, Turkey is the sixth-largest onshore wind market in Europe, according to Enercon.

The German wind turbine maker has installed over 3 GW in the past 27 years.

Enercon earmarked its new model E-175 EP5 for deployment within the deal. With a rotor diameter of 175 meters and a rated power of 6 MW to 7 MW, it is one of the most powerful and highest-yielding onshore turbines in Europe. The scope of delivery within the cooperation amounts to at least 350 wind turbines, Enercon said.

Bauer: A new milestone in onshore expansion in Turkey

Enercon CEO Udo Bauer said the cooperation with the two other firms represents a new milestone in its onshore expansion in Turkey. “The political support for renewables in Turkey is also exemplary. Politicians rightly see onshore wind as the cornerstone of a sustainable energy system in the country,” he added.

Polat Enerji has over 740 MW in installed capacity and 130 MW under construction or in development, board member Neşet Özgür Cireli said. “We are pleased to advance our commitment to wind energy together with Enercon both in Turkey and other countries where Polat Energy Europe invests in and develops projects,” he stated.

According to Kayahan Karadaş, CEO of İş Enerji and board member of Polat Enerji, Enercon is now their main supplier and the companies see the agreement as a new beginning.
