Petrol is about to equip 46 filling stations in Slovenia with rooftop photovoltaic systems with the help of European funds, adding to its renewable energy portfolio. Through the Petrol Green project, it is planning to install solar panels on all its gas stations in the country.

Slovenia-based Petrol, which already operates two wind farms in neighboring Croatia and has ambitious targets in the solar power segment, received EUR 445,000 from the European Union’s Cohesion Fund for cofinancing the installation of rooftop photovoltaic plants on 46 of its filling stations.

The fossil fuel, electricity and district heating distributor with headquarters in Ljubljana said the Ministry of Infrastructure approved the funds for the SE Petrol Green 1 project. The company added it would install the photovoltaic systems this year and next. They are planned to have a combined capacity of 2.4 MW.

The deadline for the implementation of both SE Petrol Green 1 and SE Petrol Green 2 expires at the end of October next year

In addition, Petrol said it applied last month through the same mechanism for its SE Petrol Green 2 project for solar power units at another 24 locations with 1.4 MW in total. The endeavor now depends on the ministry’s decision, it added. The deadline for the completion of both segments is October 31, 2023.

The Slovenian company pointed out that it intends to install solar power panels on all its remaining gas stations with the SE Petrol Green 3 project, which is under development. It is an important step for sustainable development at Petrol Group and its strategy based on the energy transition to a low-carbon society, according to the announcement.

Petrol, based in Ljubljana, is also working on projects for solar power plants and Slovenia’s first pilot geothermal power plant

Earlier this year, Petrol said it would invest EUR 17 million in three solar power plants in Croatia with a combined capacity of 22 MW. It is also participating in a consortium developing Slovenia’s first pilot geothermal power plant. Petrol also has a network of electric vehicle charging stations.
