Toplane Sarajevo launches tender for geothermal water exploration

District heating utility Toplane Sarajevo has issued a public call for a company that would conduct geothermal water exploration. It represents yet another step toward the use of geothermal energy in the district heating system of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Based on the project for hydrogeological exploration of geothermal waters in the Ilidža area for the needs of district heating, KJKP Toplane – Sarajevo obtained approval in January last year for hydrogeological exploration of geothermal waters at the Lužani location in Ilidža municipality.

The goal of the exploration is the utilization of renewable energy sources in the district heating system, Toplane Sarajevo explained.

Now, in line with the approval, a public call has been launched for conducting hydrogeological exploration of geothermal waters.

The goal is to make a well for exploratory, experimental and exploitation purposes for district heating

Toplane invited all interested and qualified companies that meet the set conditions to bid in line with the tender documentation and established deadlines.

The technical requirements for the exploration were based on the goal to make a well for exploratory, experimental and exploitation purposes for district heating.

The company launched the geothermal energy project in July 2020. In November 2021, the Sarajevo Canton and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a letter of intent for the allocation of funds for the project.

The new heating source reduces the use of natural gas

Toplane noted that it has four heating units in the Ilidža municipality, covering approximately 1,805 residential and 137 business users.

The implementation of the project has a great social value, as it would lead to an improvement in the quality of life from multiple aspects in the Ilidža area, Toplane added.

The new way of heating reduces the use of natural gas and contributes to the improvement of air quality. In addition, the use of domestic renewable energy resources eliminates dependence on events on the world energy trade stage, Toplane stressed.
