The Turkey-based Soyak is interested in investing in geothermal energy in the Croatian municipalities of Legrad and Đelekovec.

The company’s representatives have visited Legrad and they spoke with decision makers from the two municipalities about possible projects, the Municipality of Legrad said on its website.

The Turkish company applied for a concession on the recently published public call

The Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency issued a public call for a concession for the exploitation of geothermal energy in June, and Soyak is one of the companies that applied. The agency is asking for bids for four exploration areas.

Soyak intends to use geothermal energy in the Legrad-1 exploration field, the municipality said.

Both municipalities – Legrad and Đelekovec, backed the Turkish company with written and oral consent for the project.

Soyak operates hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of 150 MW and another 60 MW in geothermal power plants

Members of Soyak’s management board Taşkın Kızılok and Can Soyak and Danica Maljković from the Hrvoje Požar Energy Institute, the company’s technical advisor in Croatia, met with mayors Ivan Sabolić and Štefica Sirutka, respectively.

Soyak is involved in energy investment, residential construction, freight transport and cement production. In Turkey, it has hydropower plants with an installed capacity of an overall 150 MW and geothermal power plants with a capacity of 60 MW. Last year it established a subsidiary in Croatia to invest in energy projects.

The first geothermal power plant in Croatia was opened last year in Ciglena near Bjelovar. Geo Power Zagocha plans to build another one in the municipality of Čađavica. In the meantime, the Municipality of Babina Greda started research and exploration of geothermal potential.
