Spain will donate EUR 600,000 for an energy transition study for Serbia’s transmission system operator (TSO) Elektromreža Srbije.

EMS said the study should help it prepare for connecting renewable electricity plants to the grid.

Spain has secured the grant for the development of the technical assistance study for the energy transition of Serbia’s TSO through the FIEM fund (Fondo para la Internacionalización de la Empresa) and credit institution CIO (Instituto de Crédito Oficial).

The study will be led by Madrid-based firm Deloitte Consulting SLU and the donation is worth EUR 600,000, EMS said.

EMS will learn about the operations of the Spanish transmission system operator, Red Eléctrica de España

According to the company, the technical assistance will help it get insight into the best European practices established in the Spanish TSO, Red Eléctrica de España.

EMS will receive information on the Spanish transmission system operation rules, grid management and development procedures, as well as solutions for information systems, control center structure and the experiences from the operations of the Control Centre for Renewable Energies (CECRE), the statement reads.

The donation agreement with the fund founded in 2021, was signed by the Ambassador of Spain in Serbia Raúl Bartolomé Molina and Jelena Matejić, general manager of EMS, its first beneficiary in Serbia. Moreover, it is the only European country with such an agreement.

Matejić: A greater number of renewable energy power plants will certainly impact EMS activities significantly

CEO Jelena Matejić said the goal of the study is to prepare EMS for the upcoming connection of a large number of new renewable electricity plants to the Serbian grid.

“The donation is a serious support for the challenges that lie ahead of us because more renewables in Serbia’s production mix will for sure significantly affect the way EMS operates,” she pointed out.

Because of the impact, in her words, the national regulatory framework has already been changed, while operational procedures, computing tools and management models used by EMS were improved.

The study will additionally strengthen the company’s capacities for improving methodologies, processes and computing tools, raising its employees’ knowledge, Matejić added.

Ambassador Raúl Bartolomé Molina said it is the first Spanish donation to Serbia in recent years, indicating the strengthening of the bilateral relations, and the importance that Spain attaches to providing support to Serbia in the energy transition process.
