Automotive giant Porsche plans to open a facility for the production of batteries for electric bicycles in Croatia. The factory will be part of the company’s network for the production of its first e-bike drive system.

Porsche will open a plant in Sveta Nedelja, a town not far from Zagreb. Greyp Bikes produced electric bicycles at the same site before the German company bought the Croatian firm, Poslovni Dnevnik reported.

Greyp Bikes was taken over at the end of 2021. The parent company then merged it with its subsidiary Porsche eBike Performance, founded in 2022, and shut the plant.

One of the founders of Greyp Bikes is Mate Rimac, owner of Rimac Automobili. The takeover was part of a transaction in which Porsche bought a stake in Rimac Automobili.

The plant’s opening is scheduled for next year

The plant should be opened next year on about 2,000 square meters. Porsche sees battery production in Croatia as another step towards its first drive system for e-bikes. Other segments would be manufactured in Germany, but the location has not yet been determined.

The drive system would come with a software solution. The Croatian branch of Porsche eBike Performance, located in Zagreb, is involved in the project.

Porsche recently announced that it has formed P2, a joint venture for the engineering and design of electric bicycles.

Porsche eBike Performance was founded to produce innovative drive systems for e-bikes

The strategy of the German company includes the expansion of business in the sector of electric bicycles, as a segment of mobility.

Porsche eBike Performance was founded to manufacture innovative drive systems for electric bikes. The goal is redefining mobility, the company said on its website.

The systems will be produced under two brands – FAZUA, which it got by purchasing a startup founded in 2013 in Munich, and Porsche.
