Public Power Corp.’s green energy arm PPC Renewables started building a 140 MW wind power plant in Romania’s east. It said it would complete the facility at the end of next year.

PPC is stepping up its expansion in Romania, after acquiring Enel’s entire portfolio in the country last year. The state-controlled Greek utility’s green energy subsidiary PPC Renewables declared the start of the construction phase of its 140 MW wind power project in Deleni in Vaslui county.

The company said it would install 23 GE Vernova turbines of 6.1 MW each in nominal power. The wind park near the Romania-Moldova border will be connected to the grid at the end of 2025, PPC Renewables added.

It highlighted the region’s rich wind potential and estimated the facility’s annual output at 370 GWh. It is equivalent to the electricity needs of 62,000 households, the firm pointed out.

PPC Renewables aims to boost its operational portfolio in Romania to 2 GW by end-2026

PPC Renewables already manages a portfolio of existing projects with a total capacity of over 700 MW in Romania. The Greek group claimed its portfolio in the country would exceed 2 GW by the end of 2026.

It said it currently runs 4.7 GW in Greece and Romania combined while developing projects for another 20 GW. The power utility intends to get all of it online by 2030, according to the update.

Green energy projects underway in Bulgaria, Italy, Croatia

In addition to large photovoltaic and wind projects, PPC Renewables invests in hydropower including pumped storage, in geothermal energy, the biomass and biogas segment and battery energy storage.

Last year PPC also bought an 84 MW wind power plant in Romania from Lukoil Group. The group, which established a range of partnerships with Greek and foreign companies, is also entering the Bulgarian, Italian and Croatian renewable energy markets.
