The Timișoara City Hall has launched the procedure for technical design services and execution for its photovoltaic project. It benefits from a grant receivd via the European Union’s Modernisation Fund. The 5.6 MW facility will cover an estimated two thirds of consumption for public lighting, cutting monthly costs by EUR 235,500.

Romania is hosting a surging number of green energy projects benefiting households, the public sector and smaller businesses. Buoyed by EU funding, prosumers and local authorities and their institutions and utilities have emerged as the main pillar of the country’s energy transition. Among the trailblazers is Timișoara, which has, among its other endeavors, been considering an investment in geothermal district heating.

The fourth-biggest city has brought its first solar power project to maturity and published a tender for a contractor for technical design services and execution. The 20-hectare site for the facility of 5.6 MW is in the southern part of the city. Nearby are the Freidorf industrial area and a wastewater treatment plant.

The capital of Timiș county expects to generate 7.8 GWh per year

Worth RON 32.2 million lei (EUR 6.3 million) including value-added tax, the project aims to cover two thirds of consumption of public lighting. The Municipality of Timișoara is conducting it under the European Union’s Modernisation Fund, managed by the Ministry of Energy.

The capital of Timiș county and the largest city in the country’s west expects 7.8 GWh per year. It would cut the monthly costs by RON 1.2 million (EUR 235,500). The greenhouse gas emissions equivalent in conventional electricity production is 4.800 tons of carbon dioxide.

“During this complicated period, it is important to invest in green energy and in developing our own energy production capacities,” Mayor Dominic Fritz said. Companies can submit bids through the national public procurement platform.

In 2024, the city signed a strategic partnership with OMV Petrom to utilize geothermal energy for district heating.
