Kozloduy NPP – New Builds PLC called on potential contractors to express interest in the construction of a new nuclear power plant with AP1000 technology in northwestern Bulgaria.
Kozloduy is Bulgaria’s only nuclear power plant, with an installed capacity of 2,000 MW. In 2022, the country decided to abandon the Belene nuclear plant project and build more reactors in Kozloduy.
Project company Kozloduy NPP – New Builds PLC has published an invitation for expression of interest, based on the parliament’s decision from December 2023 to install units 7 and 8 at the site of the Kozloduy NPP, opting for АР1000 technology. Kozloduy NPP – New Builds PLC is owned by Kozloduy NPP.
The firm is seeking a contractor for engineering, construction, procurement and the commissioning of the facility under a turnkey deal.
A two-stage procedure is planned
The overall objective of the assignment is to have the AP1000 plant operational by 2035, the invitation reads.
The deadline for expressions of interest is February 2, while the procedure envisages two phases.
The current call is for companies to qualify for the job.
Shortlisted candidates would have an opportunity to submit their offers in a subsequent procedure. The contractor will be selected following negotiations.
Westinghouse is the AP1000 design authority
United States-based Westinghouse Electric Company is the AP1000 design authority. It will delegate the responsibilities for the design of individual systems and buildings within the plant, Kozloduy NPP – New Builds PLC explained.
Of note, in June 2023, the company based in Pennsylvania signed a contract on front-end engineering and design (FEED) for a new unit at the Kozloduy NPP.
In October, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said Greece, North Macedonia, and Serbia would prefer long-term supply contracts than to invest in two new reactors in Kozloduy.
