Metalac from Gornji Milanovac in Serbia’s west invested EUR 3 million in renewable energy and the reconstruction of its heating system, Chief Executive Officer Rada Trifunović said. The main segment is a 2.9 MW photovoltaic unit.

Cookware and water heater manufacturer Metalac, which has a tradition of more than six decades, is finishing one of the largest solar power plants in Serbia. The facility with 6,400 panels is being installed on the roofs of two of its plants.

Works started in July. The photovoltaic plant will generate an estimated 3.25 GWh of electricity per year.

CEO Rada Trifunović told Bloomberg Adria that the company has invested EUR 3 million in total in renewable energy and energy efficiency. The reconstruction of the heating system, which cost EUR 500,000, will reduce gas consumption, she added.

The rooftop solar power plant will lower electricity purchases in Metalac by 15% to 20%, Trifunović pointed out. The company with five business units is the biggest electricity producer in its county and also very dependent on gas, she stressed.

The Ministry of Mining and Energy of Serbia recently revealed the combined capacity of power plants owned by registered prosumers reached 5.7 MW and that 100 MW in such projects is in the process of connecting to the grid. Metalac didn’t clarify whether it would obtain the status.
