The Cirkovce-Pince-Hévíz power transmission line, the first between Hungary and Slovenia, is now operational, national transmission system operators ELES and MAVIR have announced.

Power line Cirkovce-Pince-Hévíz is operating as testing and trial-run are underway, while the interconnection will be included in the cross-border capacity calculation process starting from July 6, 2022.

The cross-border project implemented by ELES envisages the construction of the 80.5 km long double circuit 400kV overhead line Cirkovce-Pince and the new 400 kV Cirkovce substation, both in Slovenia.

ELES, and MAVIR said that the planned physical connection between the Hungarian and the Slovenian electricity systems was established on the scheduled date of June 30.

The transmission system operators ELES, MAVIR, and Croatia’s HOPS carried out preliminary tests and measurements of the newly built international connection, which will provide a more stable and reliable operation of the electricity system at the 400 kV voltage level and contribute to an even the stronger connection of these markets to common EU internal electricity market.

The construction of the Cirkovce-Pince transmission line is the last phase of the Hungarian-Croatian-Slovenian 400 kV transmission grid connection project which implementation started in mid-1990s. The power line is connected to one circuit of the existing double circuit 400kV OHL Hévíz (Hungary) – Žerjavinec (Croatia).

The transmission line construction took place from August 2020 to June 2022

On the Hungarian side, a double-circuit tie-line between Hévíz and the Slovenian-Croatian-Hungarian border was completed before the turn of the millennium. The Slovenian system has now been connected to a 5-kilometer branch constructed earlier by Hungary.

The transmission line construction took place from August 2020 to June 2022 on the Slovenian side, when all the conditions were met for the transmission line to be energized, ELES said.

The Hévíz – Cirkovce – Pince 2×400 kV international transmission line project between Hungary and Slovenia is significant for EU energy policy purposes, which is why it was included in the list of the so-called Projects of Common Interest (PCI).

The project has received EU funding

The project overhead line 2×400 kV Cirkovce – Pince and the substation 400/110 kV Cirkovce has received EUR 48.2 million under Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The overall investment was estimated at EUR 102.5 million.

ENTSO-E earlier aid that the project will establish two new cross-border lines – Heviz-Cirkovce and Cirkovce-Žerjavinec.

The project will allow Slovenia, Hungary, Italy and surrounding countries to access energy markets in the east, including import, and improve reliability and security of supply.
