In cooperation with Huawei and SolarAPEX, aluminum producer Tosyalı is building solar power systems of an overall 140 MW on roofs at all its facilities.
Tosyalı Holding from Turkey and its partners claim it would be the largest rooftop solar power plant company in the world, reaching a total installed capacity of 140 MW on an area with a combined surface of 63.2 hectares. It launched the project with Huawei and domestic firm SolarAPEX, which provides turnkey installation services.
The Tosyalı Roof project will be launched at all the aluminum producer’s facilities at the same time, the companies revealed. The first phase, with 85 MW of power, is scheduled to be completed in seven months, and the rest should be finished in April 2023, they added.
Main milestone for zero carbon target
“As Tosyalı Holding, our goal is to bring fossil fuel use to the lowest possible level. In line with this strategy, we will start to use hydrogen as a substitute for fossil fuels in iron and steel production for the first time in Turkey. We will use some of the electricity from the solar power plant we have built for these hydrogen-oriented operations. This project will be our main milestone for the zero carbon target,” Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tosyalı Holding Co. Fuat Tosyalı said.
Tosyalı is turning to green hydrogen production to substitute fossil fuels in production
The company said it focuses on sustainability-oriented green steel production at nearly 30 facilities on three continents, with 15,000 employees. In the last few years, it carried out over 100 research and development projects, which reduced carbon emissions by 30%, according to the statement.
Tosyalı said it produces pipes with the lowest carbon footprint of the sector at its Tosçelik facilities. One of them is in Nikšić, Montenegro. The plant is also known as Željezara. The company’s biggest hub is in Algeria.
Rooftop PV project is worth USD 71 million
The holding’s rooftop solar plant, which was previously established by group companies Tosçelik Profil and Sac at its production facilities in Osmaniye in Turkey, was among the top five rooftop solar plants in the world, the announcement reads. Tosyalı earlier said it would expand solar power capacity there to 70 MW from 10 MW.
“In the next five years, sustainability will be our main agenda item. We want to be one of the world’s leading green steel producers, providing best cases in this regard and contributing to the construction of a more sustainable life,” Fuat Tosyalı said.
SolarAPEX is enabling advanced efficiency in all conditions
The rooftop photovoltaic plant, worth USD 71 million, is planned for an annual production of 250 GW, equivalent to the power consumption of 84,000 households in Turkey, and carbon savings of 116.525 tons.
Tosyalı Holding will produce the greenest steel in the world, General Manager of SolarAPEX and the project’s Executive Director Fatih Dogan said. His firm is implementing the so-called purlin connection’ technique, enabling advanced efficiency in all conditions, the statement adds.
Fuat Tosyali has pointed out that the aluminum maker would invest USD 5.5 billion in the next five years.
Of note, Eti Alüminyum, another Turkish aluminum producer, is expanding its solar park with two projects that are envisaged to lift the capacity to 163 MW, with the aim to produce green aluminum and reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
