Slovenia’s solar capacity surges to 1.65 GW

Slovenia increased its solar power capacity by 228 MW last year, reaching 1,650 MW, according to data from ELES, the country’s transmission and distribution system operator.

Nearly 70,000 solar power units were on the grid in Slovenia in 2025, with a total installed capacity of 1,650 MW. The capacity increased by 16% from 2024, when it was 1,422 MW.

Although the number of new photovoltaic plants surged between 2021 and 2024, last year saw moderate growth in both capacity and the number of facilities with solar panels.

The report reveals an increase in the rate of installation of units with higher capacity

Between 2021 and 2025, the installed capacity of all PV plants grew by more than 1,000 MW, from 470 MW to 1,650 MW. The most significant expansion was recorded in 2022, when the capacity surged by more than 400 MW in a single year, followed by 2023, which saw an additional rise of over 300 MW, ELES explained.

The level at the end of 2025 is comparable to the 1,600 MW capacity of a nuclear reactor that would be among the options within the project for the second unit of the Krško nuclear power plant, according to the company.

The 7% increase in the number of solar plants last year was lower than the nearly 16% growth rate of installed capacity, which indicates the trend is shifting toward the installation of larger power plants.

ELES is formally the DSO, but the five power distribution firms carry out DSO tasks.

The largest number of solar power systems is in the Elektro Ljubljana area, where the count is approaching 20,000. In 2025 alone, 1,023 units were installed, representing a 5% increase from the end of 2024.

Elektro Celje and Elektro Maribor each have more than 15,000 facilities on their distribution networks. In 2025, their number increased by 1,000 each, which is 6% to 7% more than at the end of 2024.

In the Elektro Primorska area, 671 PV units were connected last year. It is equivalent to 11% of the 2024 tally.

The fewest PV plants were connected in the Elektro Gorenjska area – 414, or 7% more than the 2024 total. At the end of last year, Elektro Primorska and Elektro Gorenjska each had 7,000 facilities.
