Athens-based conglomerate HELLENiQ Energy started commercial operations of its first two photovoltaic parks in Romania. The overall renewables target for the next three years is 1.5 GW.
HELLENiQ Energy now has 560 MW from renewable sources in operation. It has completed and put into operation two solar power plants in southern Romania, calling it a key milestone. The facilities, the Greek company’s first in the country, have 58 MW combined.
They were part of the agreement signed in 2023 with Metlen, which was called Mytilineos at the time. The remaining two projects, for 153 MW altogether, are expected to be completed and enter commercial operation in 2026, the update reads.
The launch of the solar parks marks the beginning of the group’s operational presence in the Romanian renewable energy market. The construction of a 96 MW wind farm in northeastern Romania is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2027.
Romanian portfolio exceeding 850 MW
HELLENiQ Energy’s total renewable energy portfolio in the country exceeds 850 MW, including energy storage.
The company is present in the renewables sector in Greece, Romania, Cyprus, Bulgaria and North Macedonia, with 564 MW now in operation. In its home country, it has built one of the biggest PV plants in Europe.
The management aims to reach 1.5 GW within the next three years and more than 2 GW by 2030, focusing on vertical integration, geographic and technological diversification, and the creation of long-term value.
HELLENiQ building regional renewables platform
Following the integration of Enerwave in 2025, the renewables, power and gas business is a central pillar of the group’s transformation and growth strategy, forming a vertically integrated electricity and natural gas regional platform with an increasing contribution to financial performance, according to the conglomerate.
“Romania is a strategic market for the development of our renewable energy portfolio, and the launch of our first RES projects in the country marks an important step towards building a strong regional renewable energy platform for HELLENiQ Energy in Southeastern Europe. Developing renewable energy projects in dynamic markets across the region strengthens energy security, reduces dependence on non-EU energy suppliers and enables offering more competitive energy costs for consumers,” said Deputy Chief Executive Officer George Alexopoulos.
