The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy published a guide for its upcoming energy efficiency program called Energy Saving 2025.
The energy efficiency program’s budget is set at EUR 434 million. It is part of the European Union’s RePowerEU initiative and Resilience and Recovery Facility (RRF).
The scheme envisages covering tens of thousands of households with energy upgrades. The ultimate goal is to reduce energy consumption by a minimum of 30% and lift the energy classes by at least three grades.
Papathanasis: The social criteria were widened
“Through this new program we establish wider social criteria than before,” said Alternate Minister of Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis.
The initiative will make use of new technologies to help the environment, but also help families reduce their bills by saving energy, added Minister of Environment and Energy Thodoros Skylakakis.
Program to cover 50% to 100% of upgrade costs
Only primary residencies can be included. Additional support is earmarked for vulnerable households, families with at least three children and people living in areas where natural disasters occurred in recent years, such as Thessaly in central Greece.
Through the program, beneficiaries can cover 50% to 100% of the costs of new insulation, switching to heating and cooling systems that run on renewables and installing smart home applications and battery energy storage.
The maximum support level per household is 1.2 times the annual energy saving in accordance with each home’s energy certificate or EUR 36,000 in absolute terms.
Furthermore, different levels of support are offered depending on the region and climate conditions. The coldest areas will receive the highest amounts. Equally important, interest for participants who use loans to finance their upgrades will be stable and covered 100% through the program.
Applications for Energy Saving 2025 will be accepted from January 8 until March 20. Potential beneficiaries can submit them via the program’s web platform.
