Slovenia is trying to encourage municipalities and the population to accept wind power plants on their territory. Local authorities are now entitled to EUR 200,000 per MW.

Municipalities in Slovenia won the right to compensation from the government if they allow the installation of wind turbines. After a long procedure, the cabinet adopted a decree stipulating that local authorities would receive EUR 200,000 per MW.

The funds, intended for social programs, will be paid through the subsidy mechanism for renewables. The minimum capacity is 1 MW.

The measure is the government’s response to local populations’ opposition to wind turbines

The measure was introduced because of local opposition to wind power projects and lengthy procedures. It is aligned with the Law on the Introduction of Devices for the Production of Electricity, adopted last year.

Slovenia hosts only three wind turbines and they are all separate units. There are several projects under development in the country. Due to the delays, it is lagging far behind its renewable energy goals. However, Slovenia is advancing on other fronts, primarily in solar power, and the first energy communities are being set up.

According to the new regulation, the one-off compensation will be paid to a municipality after the investor receives the construction permit.
