The construction of a flue gas desulphurization facility at coal-fired power plant Nikola Tesla A is in its final phase and trial work should begin by April, Minister of Mining and Energy of Serbia Dubravka Đedović Handanović said.

The flue gas desulphurization facility at thermal power plant Nikola Tesla A (TENT A) also started to produce gypsum, a byproduct of the process.

It is one of the most important environmental projects in Serbia, Đedović Handanović said.

The minister noted it would bring cleaner air for the citizens of nearby Obrenovac and its surroundings and added it would cut sulphur dioxide emissions by ten times.

EPS can play a significant role in the circular economy

The investment will also extend the lifespan of TENT A and make it comply with European Union standards on emission limit values, Đedović Handanović said.

The flue gas desulfurization unit in TENT A, operated by state-owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), will serve units A3 to A6.

She pointed out that the facility enables gypsum to be produced from waste as a byproduct, to be used in the construction industry. It demonstrates that EPS can play a significant role in the circular economy, the minister stressed.

The desulfurization project in TENT A is implemented with financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the contractor is the Japanese company Mitsubishi. Of note, a similar unit is under construction in TENT B, where sulphur dioxide emissions are envisaged to be reduced by twenty times.

EPS: Emissions in line with EU regulations

By purifying the flue gases at four units of 350 MW each, the sulphur oxide emissions will be reduced to below 200 milligrams per cubic meter, and particulate matter (PM) to under 20 milligrams per cubic meter, in line with EU standards and domestic regulations, said Srđan Josipović, director of energy production at the TENT complex.

The emissions of sulphur oxides in TENT B will be below 130 milligrams per cubic meter.

The company also said that the flue gas desulphurization facility in TENT A is EPS’s most important environmental project. It is worth almost EUR 205 million.

According to project manager Ljiljana Velimirović, the annual production of gypsum is expected to reach 600,000 tons.
