The first pilot facility for the production of hydrogen in Croatia is set to be built in Križevci, a town northeast of the country’s capital Zagreb.

Križevci is the leader of sustainable development and energy transition among the local municipalities not just in Croatia, but in the region of Southeast Europe.

The hydrogen project is being implemented by Dok-Ing from Zagreb and municipal waste management utility Križevačko Komunalno Poduzeće, Podravski.hr reported. The former reached an advanced stage in the construction of a prototype facility that would use municipal waste and sludge from wastewater treatment.

Three types of waste will be used as raw material

The two firms have agreed to transport the facility from Zagreb to Križevci. it will be operated by Križevačko Komunalno Poduzeće.

Martin Kozjak, CEO of the utility, said the permit they obtained envisages a waste processing pilot project in cooperation with the company Indeloop, part of Dok-Ing group. The facility will be located at the waste separation site. Non-recyclable waste, wood waste and mixed municipal waste will be the raw materials.

With the pilot project, the municipal firm wants to contribute to solving the issue of waste disposal in the most environmentally friendly way possible, he stressed.

Kozjak added it is important there wouldn’t be any harmful emissions from the facility.

The facility will use pyrolysis and the authorities claim that there will be no harmful emissions

The facility will use pyrolysis, the article adds. It is a process in which all organic waste and hydrocarbon-based compounds including plastisc can be used. It is not incineration, because it doesn’t involve oxygen, but waste treatment at 1,500 degrees Celsius. Pyrolysis turns waste into a gas, which represents a form of recycling, and hydrogen is obtained.

Of note, Croatia also has another innovative project for hydrogen production. It is under development by energy firm E.ON Croatia.
