The construction of a new hydropower plant in Nevesinje in the Republic of Srpska began last week with the launch of a project of a tunnel worth BAM 112 million (EUR 57.3 million), Srna agency reported.

Total investment into the 159 MW Dabar facility in the southeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina is estimated at EUR 180 million, while expropriation and preparation for construction have so far cost EUR 16.8 million. The construction was trusted with Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske (ERS) and its subsidiary Hidroelektrane na Trebišnjici a.d. (HET). Entity authorities are committed to the development of renewable energy facilities and the government in Banja Luka won’t privatize the state-owned utility, Milorad Dodik, Srpska’s president, said at the ceremony marking the start of the works on the headrace gallery.

The investment in the tunnel will be financed by HET, the firm’s director Gordan Mišeljić stated and added the concession was given to Hidroelektrana Dabar d.o.o. Trebinje, owned by the local company. He stressed the project would enable revenues for municipalities in eastern Herzegovina, while that Nevesinje alone would receive EUR 640,000 per year.
