A special purpose entity – private company not from the utilities sector, which promotes a project for three wind farms in Tanagra municipality in Viotia prefecture, applied for funding support, the European Investment Bank said on August 25.

The portfolio includes the construction and operation of facilities with an overall capacity of 50 MW in the area also known as Boeotia in central Greece, north of capital Athens. The international financing institution didn’t disclose the requested amount or other details in its section of endeavors in the pipeline.

The project contributes to the bank’s objectives for climate action, making it eligible in the segment of operating in less developed regions and in renewable energy as a common interest, the statement said. Wind power plants contribute to European Union’s and national targets for green energy generation, EIB added.

The country’s competent authority is to judge whether an individual wind farm requires an environmental impact assessment (EIA). The project has been screened in according to Greek law and each wind farm underwent an individual process, the bank said and noted no significant negative impacts were identified. All permits appear to be in place, including an environmental terms approval based on environmental impact studies, it stated.

The closest Natura 2000 site  – special protection area Oros Parnitha, is five to ten kilometers away from the power plant sites. During appraisal, the authorization procedure of the project will be reviewed, including public consultations and its compliance with EU directives, EIB said.

The unnamed company has no status of a contracting entity and is not subject to the bloc’s rules on public procurement, according to the announcement, which adds the conclusion may be revised following the appraisal.
