Greece-based SolarService said it completed a group of connected solar parks in the country’s west, with a combined peak capacity of 110 MW. The panels are mounted above ground, allowing for cattle grazing below them.

One of the biggest solar power clusters in Europe has been completed. The system in the Western Greece administrative unit was designed, licensed and built by SolarService. The solar power installer said it has a peak capacity of 110 MW, Energypress reported.

The firm’s headquarters are in Agrinio, the largest city in the Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit. It also specializes in cleaning, supervision and maintenance.

SolarService revealed that the photovoltaic cluster consists of almost 167,000 bifacial panels. The lower sides of such devices also generate electricity, by using reflection from below. Annual output is estimated at over 180 GWh.

The National Bank of Greece financed the endeavor, according to the announcement. The system is connected to the transmission network through a 20 kV / 150 kV substation, the company said on its website.

Of note, the solar panels are mounted high above the ground. SolarService said it allows farmers to graze their cattle for free at the locations of the solar parks.

The agrisolar or agrivoltaics concept implies food production at the site of a photovoltaic facility. The approach is becoming more popular due to disputes with farmers and activists over the use of agricultural land for renewable energy.

The latest official data showed Greece had photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 5.8 GW at the end of June.
