The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has launched a tender for the construction of regional sanitary landfill Kalenić. The project will provide appropriate waste management for more than 360,000 inhabitants of 11 municipalities and cities.

Serbia has only 12 sanitary landfills, which is why almost two-thirds of its 2.9 million tons of municipal waste end up in unsanitary and illegal landfills. The impact of building new sanitary landfills was recently demonstrated by the start of operation of the Vinča landfill, which instantly raised the disposal of waste at sanitary landfills by 50%.

If everything goes to plan, Kalenić should be in operation two years after the start of construction. However, the project has been in preparation for 13 years and there has been a lot of delay in its implementation.

Once it is built, Kalenić will be the 13th sanitary landfill in Serbia

The Ministry of Environmental Protection has announced a public procurement procedure for the construction of the new sanitary landfill and related infrastructure.

The job includes the construction of access roads, power lines, the sanitary landfill, and fixed equipment, said the EBRD.

According to the ministry, the project is part of the Solid Waste Program in Serbia. It is financed from loans signed between Serbia, the EBRD, and the French Development Agency in the amount of EUR 150 million.

The Kalenić landfill project has been in preparation for 13 years

The program has two phases, with the first envisaging the construction of regional sanitary landfills in Užice (Duboko), Nova Varoš (Banjica), Sombor (Rančevo) and Valjevo (Kalenić). The second phase will see the construction of regional waste management systems in Sremska Mitrovica and Pirot.

The construction of the Kalenić landfill will cost an estimated EUR 31.5 million. The project will secure appropriate waste management for Valjevo, Obrenovac, Lazarevac, Ub, Barajevo, Vladimirci, Lajkovac, Mionica, Koceljeva, Osečina and Ljig.
