Electricity prices for companies will not be increased, Prime Minister of Serbia Ana Brnabić said, reacting to rumors that the government would raise the price from EUR 95 to EUR 120 per megawatt-hour (MWh).

Prime Minister Ana Brnabić denied the price of electricity for businesses would be increased to EUR 120 per MWh. She noted that the current prices are EUR 70 per MWh for citizens and EUR 95 per MWh for firms and added they are the lowest in Europe.

The claim that the price of electricity would rise to EUR 120 per MWh was published to destabilize Serbia, she told Pink, the Government of Serbia said.

Brnabić said the price of electricity on the market varies from EUR 350 per MWh to more than EUR 600 per MWh, adding that the government is subsidizing them to make the economy more competitive.

The price of electricity for firms has been under the government’s control since November of last year

Of note, since November last year, the Government of Serbia has been controlling the price of electricity for businesses, which used to be formed in the free market. The government opted for the move because of the energy crisis and a severe, 200% price increase in the market, to EUR 150 per MWh.

The tariff was last increased in late August, from EUR 75 per MWh to EUR 95 per MWh or almost 27%. The decision is valid until the end of December, when the government is scheduled to update it.
