US-based Westinghouse Electric Company has signed memorandums of understanding with three companies in Slovenia. They intend to cooperate on the possible installation of AP1000 nuclear power plants across Central and Eastern Europe.

Westinghouse plans to cooperate with Numip, Elmont, and SIPRO inženiring.

“These partnerships will enable us to work hand-in-hand with leading local suppliers to deliver the highest international standards of quality, safety, and reliability in Slovenia and within Europe,” said Elias Gedeon, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations at Westinghouse Energy Systems.

Several countries in Central and Eastern Europe said they would install nuclear power plants or that they are considering the idea

Numip delivers engineering, construction and maintenance services for conventional power and processes across various industries, while Elmont provides ongoing support for the maintenance of electrical equipment.

SIPRO inženiring secures project planning and management solutions, technology, and product development support, along with several other services.

Nuclear energy is experiencing a renaissance in Europe

Several countries in Central and Eastern Europe said they would install nuclear power plants or that they are considering the idea: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia.

Slovenia, which hosts the Krško nuclear power plant, plans to install a second unit.

Nuclear energy is experiencing a renaissance in Europe driven by energy transition and the energy crisis, which have worsened with the Russian military intervention in Ukraine.

In January, after months of intense debate and lobbying, the European Commission decided to include nuclear energy and gas in its sustainable finance taxonomy.
