The Government of Serbia said the first auction for market premiums for electricity from renewable sources would be held by the end of the year, and determined a 400 MW quota for wind power plants.

Power plants that use renewable sources are eligible to participate at upcoming auctions for awarding the right to market premiums if their approved capacity is higher than 500 kW, with the exception of wind power plants – their minimum capacity is 3 MW, the Government of Serbia said after the last session. It issued a decree in which it set the quota only for wind, at 400 MW.

The support is aimed at increasing the use of energy from renewable sources and creating a competitive power production market in the sector, according to the announcement.

Since the system of incentives and mechanisms for awarding the right to incentives is new, it is necessary to conduct the first auction by the end of the year so that all the regulations and procedures envisaged by the new Law on the Use of Renewable Energy Sources are tested and implemented, the government added.

Additional decrees, regulating market premiums and feed-in tariffs and the model for the market premium contract, will be necessary for holding auctions.

Renewable energy auctions in Serbia are one of the topics at the online Hard Talk event that the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe – UNECE scheduled for November 16 and 17.
