PEPO Energy, a joint venture between Switzerland-based energy company MET Group, and Arhar Teh, a local firm in the north-eastern Serbian village of Novo Miloševo, has built and put in operation a green energy power plant.
The biogas power plant with an installed capacity of 1.2 MW utilizes residue agricultural biomass for biogas production, which in turn generates electricity and heat. The investment is estimated at EUR 5 million.
MET Group entered the PEPO project in May 2020, acquiring 51% of the equity and providing the necessary project finance, according to the company’s press release.
MET Renewables, part of MET Group, and Serbia-based energy company NIS are jointly developing the 102 MW Plandište wind project in Serbia. In October MET Group acquired a 42 MW wind farm in Bulgaria.
An inauguration ceremony was attended by Zorana Mihajlović, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mining and Energy.
She said that the country has 28 biogas power plants.
Serbia is building 73 biogas power plants
“Currently, we are building another 73 biogas power plants in Serbia, and with about 100 MW of capacity being installed in a year or two, Serbia will produce more electricity from biogas than Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro together,” said Mihajlović.
Benjamin Lakatos, CEO of MET Group said that the PEPO power plant is yet another milestone in the company’s renewables strategy.
“We would like to continue to expand our renewable and conventional activities here, further investing in the Serbian economy,” he added.
