State-owned KESH intends to build a 5.1 MW solar power plant at one of the three dams at the reservoir of its Vau i Dejës hydropower plant. The company earlier revealed it would install a 12.9 MW floating photovoltaic unit at the same lake.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy said state-owned hydropower plant operator KESH expressed interest in installing a 5.1 MW solar power plant at its Vau i Dejës facility in Albania’s northwest. The company applied for a license to build the photovoltaic unit at Qyrsaqi, one of the three dams on the reservoir.

The deadline for objections and comments is January 23. KESH said it won’t need to obtain a concession to add the solar power plant.

The construction of Vau i Dejës, which has a capacity of 250 MW, began in 1967. The last segment was finished in 1975.

KESH is also planning to install a 12.9 MW floating solar power plant at the same reservoir and finance the project with a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The addition would make Vau i Dejës a hybrid power plant.

In other renewable energy news from Albania, Nikolica Ski Resort and Renew Power Albania applied for licenses for the construction of two wind power units of 3 MW each in Karaburun near Vlora. Investors can register separate firms for effectively the same project and avoid the need to ask for a concession.
