A firm founded in 2009 was acknowledged for UEGOS, a solution to prevent voltage deviations and protocol barriers between smart devices and the power grid. Typhoon HIL was chosen in the PowerUp! competition in Serbia to participate in the finals in Poland.

Typhoon HIL Inc. has impressed the jury with a tool for the communication between smart devices and the grid and won the third PowerUp! challenge in Serbia as the best startup. The presentations and the ceremony were held online because of the corona crisis, but the great finals are still tentatively scheduled to be held in Kraków on June 3.

The firm had the best idea, potential and pitch with its Universal Energy Gateway operating system or UEGOS. The software is powered by Linux and Python.

Users can aggregate, monitor and control distributed energy resources and smart appliances using existing or new gateways. The company has already gone beyond the startup phase, its marketing representative Aleksandar Kavgić claimed and revealed the team is improving the interface for the already functional product.

The system is easy to install and it can work with various protocols, he added. Kavgić explained adding renewables and smart devices into the system can lead to voltage deviations and that UEGOS takes them out of the equation. Pilot projects are planned in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, he asserted.

Typhoon HIL, founded in 2009, also helps electrify transportation and develop solar plants, according to its engineers.

The competition was started with the ambition to support future unicorns – growing companies with valuations of more than USD 1 billion, organizers from EIT InnoEnergy said.

This time, 425 firms in an early stage of growth applied from Central Eastern European countries in an attempt to get access to investors and potential partners. The network also promises assistance in product enhancement and development, pilot projects and commercialization strategies.

The audience award for the best startup in Serbia went to WhiteLemur. It has developed SOMA, a biodegradable and cost-efficient packaging product from waste that replaces petrochemicals.

Country finals come just days after virtual bootcamps. The categories are energy, clean technologies, mobility, cybersecurity, smart cities and clean air. The competition is in its sixth year overall.

Last year’s winner in Kraków was Danubia NanoTech from Slovakia.
