Urban sprawl requires and is driving a smart city transformation, according to the main messages of the Smart City SEE19 international conference held in Belgrade. The smart city concept is part of innovative solutions that need to be regulated in Serbia through the adoption of a new energy law, while e-mobility, which is part of the concept, should be powered by renewables, not coal, according to panelists.

Olive trees are threatened by construction machinery on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, while pits in Croatia’s karst rock, which holds some of the world’s richest underground habitats, have been turned into illegal dumpsites. These are only some of the images that the region had to show on May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity, this year themed “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health.”

3 – Bulgaria scraps electricity export fee, enabling market coupling with North Macedonia
Bulgaria has amended its energy law to abolish a fee levied on exports of electricity, in what will remove obstacles to trade with Energy Community contracting parties in the Balkans and pave the way for the future market coupling with North Macedonia, the Energy Community Secretariat said in a statement welcoming the move.
The amendments to the energy law, approved by the Bulgarian parliament on May 9, will come into force on July 1, 2019, the Secretariat said.
