The Energy Community’s Secretariat has submitted to the Kosovo* ministry of environment a draft new climate change law, according to a statement from the Secretariat.

This new climate change law would be transposing Regulation (EU) No 525/2013 on a mechanism for monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the Recommendation of the Ministerial Council of the Energy Community on preparing for the development of integrated national energy and climate plans.

The Secretariat expects discussions at the technical level on this draft in the coming months.

During last year’s Ministerial Council, the Contracting Parties of the Energy Community committed to setting targets for renewable energy, energy efficiency and GHG emission reduction.

The Secretariat committed to support the Contracting Parties in drafting adequate legislation, especially in the context of the preparation of integrated National Energy and Climate Plans, according to the statement.

* This designation is without prejudice to positions on status and is in line with UNSCR 1244/99 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.
