The European Union published calls under the 2018-2020 Horizon Work Programme for project proposals focusing on smart cities, smart energy systems or renewable fuels with the deadline for submissions expiring on April 5, 2018. Among other countries, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo*, Montenegro, and Serbia are also eligible for funding.

The calls have a total budget of EUR 138.3 million. As of December 5, interested parties can submit a proposal.

“The topics open for applications are Developing and testing solutions for smart cities and communities -EUR 43 million, Developing and demonstrating integrated local energy systems (energy islands) – EUR 26.3 million, Decarbonising energy systems of geographical islands – EUR 19 million, TSO-DSO – Consumer: large-scale demonstrations of innovative grid services – EUR 30 million, and Demonstrating cost-effective advanced biofuel pathways in retrofitted industrial installations – EUR 20 million,” European Union’s Innovation and Networks executive Agency said.

The requirements for submitting a project proposal are detailed in the relevant documents published on each topic’s page. Applicants have to submit their proposal electronically, following the link from the topic’s page on the Participant Portal.

The submitted proposals are evaluated by independent experts drawn from the European Commission’s database of external evaluators.

On 27 October 2017, the European Commission presented the final Work Programme for Horizon 2020, covering the budgetary years 2018, 2019 and 2020 and representing an investment of around EUR 30 billion.

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly EUR 80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries, and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.
