German company wpd submitted the documentation for the construction of a wind power plant of 400 MW as a strategic investment, North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev revealed. He valued the investment at EUR 500 million.

After announcing that the government was about to make a deal for a planned wind farm between Kumanovo, Staro Nagoričane and Kriva Palanka with a German investor, Prime Minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev told TV Klan the partner is wpd.

The facility is planned to have a capacity of 400 MW and it will be worth EUR 500 million, he claimed. Zaev reiterated that the company filed the application for the establishment of a strategic investment partnership.

First strategic investor

The prime minister earlier said the negotiations were completed and expressed hope the bill on strategic investments would soon enter the parliamentary procedure.

The project is envisaged to be implemented without government incentives

“The positive thing here is that we won’t have an obligation for either feed-in tariffs or premiums,” he said with regard to the planned wind farm in the northeast of North Macedonia as he presented a seven-year investment plan of EUR 8.2 billion.

The legal framework would enable wpd to be the first with the status of a strategic investor in the country.

Balkan expansion plans

The German company operates in the region through its subsidiary wpd Adria. It owns four wind power plants in Croatia. The firm is developing the Brajići project in Montenegro and has plans for more than 1.2 GW in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina including a solar park.

According to its website, wpd Adria is interested in investing throughout former Yugoslavia and in Albania.
