Serbian state-owned coal and power producer Elektroprivreda Srbije – EPS sold 26.7 GWh of electricity in the free market on March 2 for a record EUR 4.06 million and said it is the biggest net exporter in Southeastern Europe in the sector.

EPS is recovering from a series of outages that occurred in late 2021 and early last year due to fires and malfunctions at its coal pits and thermal power plants. The utility said it cashed in over EUR 21 million from power exports in February alone and that currently it is the largest net exporter in Southeastern Europe.

Moreover, EPS said it achieved record daily sales of electricity in the free market on March 2, EUR 4.06 million. Through power exchanges in Serbia and the region, it agreed to deliver 26.7 GWh, according to the announcement.

The Zvornik hydropower plant keeps breaking records in output since its reconstruction, which was completed in 2020

In the first three days of March alone, net income from sales in the free market came in at EUR 8.8 million, EPS said. The Zvornik hydropower plant reached a record on March 2 in daily output – 2.92 GWh. The 68-year-old facility achieved the previous all-time high on December 22.

It is one of the oldest hydropower plants in the company’s portfolio. It keeps breaking records in production since it was reconstructed from 2016 to 2020. The upgrade increased the capacity of the facility on the Drina river in western Serbia by 30 MW to 126 MW and extended its lifetime by 40 years.

Serbia is relying on Norwegian expertise and Nordic investors in an attempt to reform its energy sector, particularly government-controlled companies like EPS.
