GEN-I and R.Power signed a long-term optimization agreement for the Scornicești battery energy storage system (BESS). The project is for 127 MW in operating power and a capacity of 254 MWh.

Under a new agreement, GEN-I is becoming the exclusive commercial optimizer and trading partner for R.Power’s Scornicești BESS. It is one of the largest utility-scale storage projects under development in Romania.

The deal covers the period from start of commercial operation until the fifth anniversary of full revenue activation, Slovenia-based GEN-I said. The project is for 127 MW in capability and a two-hour duration, which translates to 254 MWh in energy storage capacity. Scornicești is in Olt county, west of Bucharest.

From wholesale markets to real-time dispatching

GEN-I will be responsible for the full commercial optimization of the asset across wholesale electricity markets and ancillary service mechanisms, including market optimization, revenue management, and real-time dispatching, all supported by 24/7 algorithmic trading operations, the update reads.

GEN-I said it would provide a minimum revenue guarantee

The cooperation is based on a long-term revenue-sharing model, aligning the interests of R.Power as asset owner and GEN-I as optimization partner, the company explained. In addition to performance-based revenue sharing, GEN-I said it would provide a minimum revenue guarantee, ensuring predictable cash flows for the project while maximizing the long-term market value of the battery asset.

“This agreement represents another important step in the expansion of GEN-I’s battery storage optimisation portfolio in Central and South-Eastern Europe. Romania is in a phase of power-market transformation, with increasing renewable capacity and a growing role for flexibility and storage solutions in maintaining system balance. GEN-I’s role is to translate this complexity into value for asset owners by combining deep regional market knowledge, real-time trading capabilities, and long-term optimisation expertise,” said Igor Koprivnikar, member of the company’s management board.

Deal follows GEN-I’s recent arrangement with Sunotec

In November, the Slovenian power supplier and trader signed a similar deal with Sunotec for its BESS facilities in Bulgaria.

Joint venture partner Eiffel Investment Group holds just under 50% of the Scornicești project. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Warsaw, R.Power has 1.4 GW in operational facilities or under construction, in Central and Eastern Europe. The company’s project pipeline of 10 GW consists of grid-secured utility-scale BESS and hybrids and renewables in markets including Poland, Romania, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
