International energy company E.ON and the electric mobility service provider Clever joined forces in order to set up ultra-fast charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) along main European motorway corridors.

Their plan is to install several hundred stations every 120 to 180 kilometers and they also invited other companies to join their efforts. E.ON and Clever share the ambition to take a leading role in shaping tomorrow’s transportation system in Europe, according to the joint statement.

“The ambition is to create a unique and coherent pan-European ultra-charging network that is capable of accommodating the charging needs of both existing electric vehicles and the next generations of EVs”, announced the companies. The first ultra-fast charger will be installed this year.

“A network of this magnitude not only requires solid funding and expertise, it would also be a game-changer for the growth of EV demand and a key blueprint for accelerating green and sustainable e-Mobility”,  said Frank Meyer, Senior Vice President at E.ON.

“The transition and mass market adoption of electric mobility requires long-range EVs and a reliable ultra-fast charging network across borders”, said the CEO at Clever Casper Kirketerp-Møller.

Initially, the ultra-fast charging stations will offer 150 kW of charging power with a modular upgrade option to 350 kW. The stations will enable charging of a full 400 kilometers range battery in only 20-30 minutes, and charging time will be further reduced as charging capacity is increased and vehicle technology also develops. The partners also plan to offer other related services to EV drivers.

In a recent interview for BGEN, CEO of the Slovenian company Hidria Iztok Seljak announced the “Green Balcanica” project, which aims to equip the highway linking Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade and Skopje and wider Munich and Istanbul with a network of strictly green renewable energy supported chargers for electric vehicles.
