Focused Energy has secured USD 240 million for the construction of a laser fusion power plant. The firm claimed it would be the world’s first commercial laser fusion power plant.

Focused Energy has raised USD 240 million and said it was the largest fully secured series A financing in the global fusion industry to date.

This milestone financing makes it the most valuable fusion company in Europe, according to the announcement. Of note, series A is the first major funding round for startups after seed funding.

Germany-based Fosuced Energy claims laser fusion is the only approach to fusion for which a scientifically verified net energy gain has been demonstrated to date.‍

The firm plans to invest the funds into the former RWE power plant site in Biblis

The investors included are RWE, the Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (SPRIND), the European Innovation Council Fund, and the previous lead investor, Prime Movers Lab.

The oversubscribed round attracted not only financially strong investors from Germany, Europe, Asia, and the Gulf region — including potential buyers of fusion energy — but also capital providers willing to fund the entire construction phase through to a fusion power plant, Focused Energy explained.

The firm plans to invest the funds into the former RWE power plant site in Biblis, Hesse, and utilize the existing infrastructure.

The emerging fusion industry ecosystem has the potential to become the nucleus of a new Made in Germany high-technology industry

The development of fusion systems will significantly accelerate, and will lead to the establishment of a new leading industry in Hesse, according to Focused Energy. It added that the emerging fusion industry ecosystem has the potential to become the nucleus of a new Made in Germany high-technology industry – with tens of thousands of skilled jobs.

Back in September 2025, three German startups including Focused Energy presented a joint roadmap on the development of the country’s fusion industry. They expected the first industrial pilot plants by 2030 and the first commercial one by the end of the 2030s.

In January, Chancellor Friedrich Merz claimed nuclear fusion would introduce electricity so cheap that it would replace wind power within thirty years.

“Germany is well-positioned to take a leading global role in nuclear fusion”

With RWE, Focused Energy gains both a strategic investor and an industrial partner that enables use of the Biblis site for laser fusion and contributes regulatory expertise.

According to RWE CEO Markus Krebber, thanks to its excellent research ecosystem and innovative start-ups such as Focused Energy Germany is well-positioned to take a leading global role in nuclear fusion.

Building the first commercial fusion reactor is the most important moonshot mission of the 21st century

“That is why we are prepared to further expand our investment in Focused Energy. It sends an important message that the German federal and state governments are working together to advance development with the goal of building a commercial fusion reactor in Germany, “ Krebber added.

‍Thomas Forner, co-founder and CEO of Focused Energy, said that fusion energy is entering a new era in Germany and Europe.

“The successful financing round confirms our scientifically grounded laser fusion approach, which has taken Focused Energy from a start-up to the world’s leading laser fusion company in just four years,” he stressed.

Rafael Laguna de la Vera, director of SPRIND, stressed that building the first commercial fusion reactor is the most important moonshot mission of the 21st century.
