The City of Zagreb intends to develop several projects and activities to improve sustainable mobility. One of them is the development of new park & ride locations.
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, currently has only one operational park & ride location, in the Borongaj neighborhood.
The City of Zagreb is continuing to improve traffic and public space with the launch of a series of projects aimed at improving sustainable mobility, traffic safety and the quality of life of citizens, according to the local authority.
The city has launched a tender for various projects.
Among them is the modernization and development of new park & ride locations. The project includes locations in Podsused and Sesvete (Ninska street), the Remetinec Roundabout (Rotor), and public transportation terminals Dubec and Gračansko dolje. It also envisages the analysis of new locations on Sarajevska cesta and near the Zapruđe Roundabout and Mihaljevac terminal.
Tomašević: We continue returning public space to citizens
All locations are designed as modern intermodal hubs, connected to public transport and public bike system Bajs, with a single ticket for parking and public transport.
“In 2026, we will continue to bring order to traffic and return public space to citizens. We will start with the analysis of parking and the development of the park & ride system to reduce congestion. In parallel, we are expanding pedestrian zones and building a new bicycle thoroughfare,” the mayor Tomislav Tomašević stressed.
The local authority also initiated an expert analysis of parking capacity in the entire city territory. The goal is to increase the availability of parking spaces for tenants, improve pedestrian safety and encourage sustainable forms of movement, the municipal government underscored.
A nine-kilometer long bicycle-pedestrian thoroughfare is planned
It claimed that parking fees currently cover about 5% of the city’s area, significantly less than in comparable European cities such as Vienna and Ljubljana.
The city also intends to create and expand pedestrian zones in various parts of Zagreb including the streets Teslina, Gajeva, Martićeva, Pod zidom.
A plan is underway to transform the former Samoborček railway into an almost nine-kilometer-long bicycle-pedestrian thoroughfare. The route would connect the western areas of Trešnjevka, Vrapče, Stenjevac, Prečko and Podsused – with the center.
The deadline for consultants to produce the studies ranges from two to nine months.
